A group of twenty students from Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi headed by Dr. Kamel Adref, Faculty, Mechanical Engineering, had conducted a visit to ACES – Yas Island Site Laboratory in Abu Dhabi recently. The purpose of the visit was to present to the students some of the advanced methods of testing of materials in order to understand the mechanical properties and behavior of materials such as steel, asphalt, soil and concrete. ACES’ material engineers had explained the procedures for testing as well as the process flow in a testing laboratory. Students observed demonstration of various tests like determination of  stress, elongation, compression and yield point of steel, degree of compaction of asphalt core samples, compaction and settlement of different types of soils under various conditions, as well as electrical conductivity of concrete as indication of it permeability to penetration of chloride ions.
